What Can I Do For My Immune System

How Does My Immune System Work ?

  What Can I Do?

What Can I Do
for My Immune System?

There are a number of  positive steps steps we can take to "unload" ourselves of things that burden our body's defense system.  Here are some ways we can all help our Immune Systems become stronger:

  • Increase Macrophage Activity - Beta-1, 3-D Glucan is the most powerful macrophage activator recognized by the scientific community.  By activating the macrophages, your body's first line of defense against infectious organisms, you can prevent being infected by them.  Beta Glucan makes the macrophages more active in recognizing and attacking bacteria, viruses, and fungi.  This activation can cause the macrophages to attack tumor cells that have been unrecognized, thus ridding the body of these tumors as the immune system mobilizes.
  • Get Enough Sleep - Our bodies repair and regenerate when we sleep.    Healing  processes take place in the body that do not occur when a person is awake.  Everyone's sleep needs are different, but 7 hours seems to be the minimum a person needs for the Immune System's best performance.  Eight hours is probably better.
  • Good Nutrition - A diet of fresh fruits and vegetables (raw as much as possible), nuts, seeds, grains, and other foods high in fiber builds the Immune System.   Eating a low fat diet may help boost the activity of natural killer cells (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition;50:851-67).   Include "good" fats in your diet ( AVOID animal products, processed foods, sugar, and sodas.   A study found that sugar slows the ability of lymphocytes to deal with foreign invaders in the body (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition;1997:613).  Experts also believe it inhibits Vitamin C's very useful role in the Immune System.
  • Valuable Nutrients for Immune System Function - Vitamin A (use moderately) is  an anti-infection vitamin.  Vitamin C is important in maintaining active macrophages.  It should be taken with bioflavonoids.  Vitamin E interacts with A and C .  It helps with free radical scavenging.  Zinc boosts the Immune System and helps healing, but too much can depress the Immune System (take 100 mg or less daily).
  • Drink Plenty of Water - Drinking sufficient amounts of water helps improve lymph fluid circulation.
  • Avoid Overeating - Eating too much stresses the system.  It is just as bad as eating the wrong thing.
  • Regular, Moderate Exercise - reduces stress and elevates mood.   This has a positive effect on the Immune System.  It also promotes production of T lymphocytes.

A number of factors can suppress the Immune System, but you can take steps correct them.  First, let's take a look at some of the things that can weaken your Immune System.

  • Stress - Studies have confirmed that stress and mental state influence immunity.  Stress accompanied by a pessimistic attitude can depress the Immune System.
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Poor Diet
  • Being Overweight - Excess weight slows the body's Immune response, maybe due to increased fats in the blood.
  • Consuming Alcohol - Alcohol lowers immunity by inhibiting the ability of white blood cells to react to "invaders" in the body when alcohol is in the bloodstream.
  • A Sedentary Lifestyle
  • Mental State - Anxiety, depression, or a negative outlook can depress immunity.
  • Marijuana Use - The most active compound in marijuana causes the white blood cells to be 35 to 40% less effective than they would normally be.
  • Underactive Thyroid - can cause recurring illnesses and fatigue.   (A thyroid self-test:  Keep a thermometer beside your bed.  When you wake up in the morning, put the thermometer under your arm, holding it there for 15 minutes.   It is important to keep still, since any motion can upset the temperature reading.   A reading of 97.6 degrees or lower could mean you have an underactive thyroid.   Keep a record of your temperature for 5 days.  If the readings are consistently low, see your health care provider.)
  • Food Allergies and Adverse Food Reactions
  • Heavy Metal Toxicity - Mercury amalgam dental fillings have been associated with low Immune System function.  Toxic metals suppress the System.

Remember: the macrophage cell is the immune systems first line of defense.
